Child protection in humanitarian action
Aleido created six e-learning courses to complement existing mini-guides for the protection of children during disease outbreaks.
The training need
The READY Initiative (READY) and the Alliance for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action (the Alliance) have created six mini guides based on the overarching Guidance Note: Protection of Children During Infectious Disease Outbreaks. A suite of six e-learning courses was required to both supplement and complement each mini guide.
The primary target audience would be child protection and health actors preparing for or responding to major infectious disease outbreaks in humanitarian settings.
The overall aim of this programme was to enhance learner awareness and knowledge of the protection of children during infectious disease outbreaks and to provide practical guidance on the ground.

Specific requirements of the e-learning included:
- Six 20-minute e-learning courses, including bespoke animation and embedded audio.
- Offer flexibility to study each module individually or as part of a program.
- A consistent look and feel, with a common interface and functionality.
- Designed and developed to accommodate translation into additional languages.
- Account for any bandwidth and connectivity issues.
- Feature a bookmarking to facilitate flexible learning.
- A responsive solution which will be available to all on the READY learning platform.
Our bespoke learning solution
Our solution encompasses six modules that have a cohesive look and feel but can each be taken as a standalone course.
The recurring design features a mix of line-drawn illustrations and humanitarian-based photography. Background images are of child-centred settings to create an immersive experience for the learner. The menu features custom icons that complement the design.
Scenarios based on real-life experiences are weaved into each module. New information is related back to the scenario at hand, adding context and meaning to the learning journey. Self-test questions dotted through each module also relate back to the scenario, challenging the learner to apply the newly acquired information in a real-life setting.
Each module features a box menu that includes topic progress indicators and estimated durations, enabling the learner to plan their learning around their schedule. A progress bar also features at the top of each screen.
Tools, resources, and further reading are signposted to the learner using custom icons and include hyperlinks for in-the-moment access. Module summaries remind learners of the resources available to them.
