Building business skills through e-learning
Business skills cover a wide range of capabilities that people need in order to perform effectively within a business environment. They are different from the core or technical skills and knowledge of a particular role or profession — think of them as the ‘how’ a job gets done, the enablers that often enhance the specific technical skills. Together, they provide a well-rounded skills set.
Business skills are critical for professional success in today’s complex environment. They often make the difference between a good performer and an exceptional one. Yet we often forget how important they are and assume that people will simply pick them up along the course of their career. While some individuals may acquire these skills through experience or education, many require intentional and effective learning opportunities.
This means organisations need accessible, scalable and engaging solutions to support business skills development.
What are business skills?
There are many skills that may be seen as business skills, and they can broadly be grouped into five clusters — Communication and Interpersonal, Leadership and Management, Analytical and Conceptual Thinking, Commercial Acumen and Personal Effectiveness.
Communication and Interpersonal
In most roles, communication and interaction with others — whether colleagues, managers, customers, or suppliers — is essential. Communication skills include verbal and non-verbal communication, active listening, questioning and written communication. They also extend to building positive relationships, managing conflict, leading meetings, delivering presentations, negotiating, handling difficult conversations, and giving effective feedback.
Leadership and Management
In today’s dynamic workplace, everyone needs aspects of leadership to be successful — not just line managers. Think of critical skills such as engaging and inspiring others, coaching and mentoring, managing change and influencing people.
Core management skills are always important, although they are evolving to be more agile and relevant to today’s organisations. These skills include managing performance, building teams, planning and organising, delegating, and managing remote workers and flexible working. Competence in key HR processes – such as recruitment, managing disciplinary and grievance procedures is also required for those who manage people.
Analytical and Conceptual Thinking
Thinking skills underpin everyday work processes and drive continuous improvement. The ability to process, interpret and apply data is becoming increasingly important across many roles. These skills can range from analytical reasoning, problem solving and decision-making through to creative thinking, innovation, and strategic planning.
Commercial Acumen
Many of the commercial skills may be organisation specific. Key competencies include financial literacy, budget management and cost control. In some roles, customer service–related skills may also be essential.
Personal Effectiveness
Setting yourself up for survival and success in a world with growing uncertainty, volatility, change and pace, requires a range of personal skills. These include emotional intelligence, adaptability and resilience, confidence and assertiveness, as well as stress and time management.
Who needs these skills?
Some business skill requirements may be universal across an organisation, while others, like management skills, will be linked to specific responsibilities. Job profiles or organisational competency frameworks may define what is required within specific roles or functions.
Individual learning needs for business skills are most often identified in the following situations:
- When someone is new to the organisation or to a role and has identified competency gaps.
- As part of career development planning and preparing for future roles or responsibilities. Many of the business skills become more important as people move up the organisational structure.
- During performance discussions, when a gap in a skill area is impacting a person’s performance or they would simply like to enhance their skills and effectiveness.
Of course, business skills may also be identified as a function- or organisation-wide need. For example, as the Information Age increases the importance of making sense of large quantities of information and making data-driven decisions, data analysis, may be a skill needed across many roles.
How to improve business performance with e-learning
With the wide variety of business skills, there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ learning solution for their development. As part of a learning strategy, e-learning offers a great option, either as a standalone solution or as part of a blended learning process. It enables:
Flexibility, accessibility and convenience for both learners and organisations
Learners can access it anytime, anywhere, on various devices, and progress at their own pace. Modules can be revisited for a refresher and made available in multiple languages to suit different needs.
Cost effectiveness, availability and scalability
For generic business skills, there are many off the shelf e-learning solutions like those offered at Aleido. These are ready for immediate deployment, provide a wide library of options for learners to access at the point of need and enable you to reach a large audience quickly and cost effectively. You can also customise these for your organisation if you want to have a specific look and feel or to adjust the content.
Engaging design options
From interactive screens explaining financial concepts and videos demonstrating performance discussions, to branching scenarios for practising conflict management and decision-making, and activities exploring communication styles—there are many engaging ways to achieve learning outcomes. Some skills can also be broken down into short microlearning modules for easier focus and greater flexibility.
A solid foundation to build on
Business skills require practice, reflection and very often collaboration, coaching and feedback from others. Starting with a self-paced e-learning module to gain a clear and common understanding of a skill and when and how to use it, prepares learners to apply the skill, share ideas with others and continually improve their performance.
Bespoke solutions
If your organisation requires a unique solution for a specific business skill, a bespoke e-learning solution can be developed. This offers the same flexibility and accessibility while achieving consistent messaging, shared understanding and targeted change across a wide audience.
Joe takes a proactive approach to his own development
Joe is currently an Engineer in the Maintenance team. He’s been in the role a few years and would really like to develop into a leadership role. After mentioning this to the department manager, they agree that the next time their team leader is on leave, he can act in their role.
Wanting to prepare ahead and set himself up for success, Joe takes a look at their company training site for courses on leadership and management skills and starts completing some of the e-learning modules in his spare time. He makes a note of questions as he goes and then meets with his team leader to discuss these. One of the things that’s piqued his interest is leadership style — he now has an idea of his preferred style, and he is wondering how it would work with the team and whether he may need to adapt his style. They discuss and agree on an approach which they’ll review once Joe has had an opportunity to try it. He’ll probably go back to the module a few times in the next few months as he reflects, gets feedback and enhances his leadership skills.

Business skills are fundamental to organisational and personal capability and having the learning resources to support development in this area will pay dividends.
