THE TRAINING NEED
UNHCR commissioned Aleido to revamp the existing UNHCR e-learning course, Age, Gender and Diversity Approach (AGD) following the release of a new AGD policy in 2018. It was identified that around 50% of the existing content could be repurposed.
The purpose of the revamp was to update:
- Content, in line with current UNHCR policies.
- Case studies and terminology.
- Design and technological aspects.
The revised AGD e-learning is aimed at all UNHCR staff and external partners.

Specific requirements of the e-learning included:
- With a wide-ranging target audience there was a need to create a product that addressed a broad user profile. The training needed to speak to all staff and avoid the use of ‘policy’ language and acronyms. As the course focuses exclusively on inclusion and diversity, case studies and any avatars had to be representative in terms of geography, ethnicity, abilities and any other characteristics.
OUR BESPOKE LEARNING SOLUTION
Consistent with the existing course, the revamped 3-hour course was initially built using the full range of Articulate Storyline features and comprised two modules, each with a duration of 90 minutes. Whilst not a fully responsive solution, it was mobile friendly.
UNHCR then commissioned Aleido to redesign the learning into a fully responsive product, presented in smaller, digestible modules. Following evaluation of the content, we identified and suggested a suitable structure and natural breakpoints in the course to facilitate bitesize learning.
The final learning solution comprised ten fully responsive bite size e-learning modules representing each of the learning objectives, plus an assessment.
The creative treatment is a contemporary blend of photography, iconography, bespoke illustrations and simple animated sequences. To fully reflect the Age, Gender and Diversity approach, it features high-quality, relevant and realistic photography featuring refugees, persons of concern and individuals who represent the diverse target audience that global humanitarians support.
Learners are engaged throughout each module via a diverse range of interactions. Scenarios, including ‘from the field’ UNHCR examples, are used to illustrate the key learning points. The learning experience is enhanced through the inclusion of summary audio narration, featuring one male and one female voice. There are varied self-test exercises throughout, that validate the learning for the audience and ensure comprehension and retention.
