Training for cycle instructors to develop the knowledge to deliver cycle training in more complex environments.

Look and feel

THE TRAINING NEED

Following on from training we had developed for the Level 2 award in Instructing Cycle Training, Bikeability asked us to develop the online element of a course for instructors to teach advanced on-road cycling (Level 3) in accordance with the National Standard for Cycle Training.

The training builds on the Level 2 skills and knowledge to focus on the transition to more challenging riding scenarios, such as multi-lane roads and complex junctions where traffic volume and speed are higher.

Specific requirements of the e-learning included:

  • A practical approach that demonstrates instructional activities in different scenarios and engages learners in thinking about how they would adapt and apply strategies to their own training delivery.
  • A responsive solution with a similar look and feel to previous training to create a sense of continuity for learners as they progress through their cycle instructing journey.
  • A single 60-minute module.

OUR BESPOKE LEARNING SOLUTION

Using a logical, progressive structure and a highly interactive and visual approach, learners are taken from foundational knowledge around delivery guidance and the National Standard for Cycling through to assessing readiness, strategies and activities for teaching in advanced on-road environments.

A friendly and open tone of voice guides, rather than prescribes, different approaches to instructing, and an experienced cycle instructor appears throughout the module in a mentor-type role. The use of different scenarios, with video, photography and illustration, demonstrates the activities in a practical and relatable way. Photoshoots were arranged to obtain bespoke images, and we worked with Bikeability to produce videos from the perspectives of both the instructor and rider.

Activities are completed throughout to encourage engagement and personal reflection on the application of the content. Responses are collated into a downloadable PDF to feed into the practical face-to-face sessions which follow the e-learning.
