MHA – Dementia awareness training

Aleido worked with MHA on a learning solution to increase understanding of dementia and how to interact and support those living with dementia within the context of people-centred care.

THE TRAINING NEED

MHA delivers trusted, high-quality care and support services that enrich the lives of older people. They were looking for e-learning to precede face-to-face sessions and discussion groups facilitated by local champions. In line with the MHA philosophy of people-centred care, the aim of the training was to ‘humanise’ dementia and:

  • Raise understanding of dementia.
  • Reduce fears of the condition and build confidence.
  • Introduce techniques for coping with behaviours associated with dementia.

The primary target audience was new entrant care staff at all MHA care homes, with a secondary audience including all other staff, including catering and maintenance staff and volunteers.

Specific requirements of the e-learning included:

  • A total duration of 90 minutes.
  • Use of case studies and innovative interactive techniques.
  • Use of audio for narration and case study characters.

OUR BESPOKE LEARNING SOLUTION

We developed two interactive and engaging 45-minute modules, a Learner Journal and a Mentor’s Guide.

The first module, Understanding dementia, provided a simple definition and described the behaviours and reactions associated with dementia. The concepts were brought to life through a variety of case studies.

In the second module, Coping with dementia, techniques are introduced using practical case studies. Learners use the Reflective Journal to relate the methods and techniques to their own experience.

What the customer had to say

Aleido have proved themselves to be an ideal learning partner for us: they spend time building a relationship in order to fully understand both the nature of the business as well as the needs of the learners in that organisation. We have been able to remain involved in the design of the training throughout the process, and have been impressed with the empathetic approach of the project team, who showed us how to deal with potentially difficult subjects in an electronic format. We have been delighted with the finished training modules, and are proud to be associated with such creative and ground breaking training.
