UNHCR – Fundamentals of Immigration Detention
Training to improve the skills of UNHCR staff on the topic of detention.
Look and feel

THE TRAINING NEED
During the analysis phase of the project, it was identified that:
- The baseline level of knowledge on the topic of detention was lower than anticipated.
- Within existing UNHCR resources, there was no learning programme which covered the fundamentals of detention.
E-learning was identified as a suitable medium for the training.
This program targeted UNHCR staff involved in legal, protection and/or community-based protection work internationally, as well as UNHCR partners and stakeholders involved with detention.

Specific requirements of the e-learning included:
- The client wanted a high level of engagement, achieved through varied interactive activities and the use of creative and practical scenarios. While the client was to develop a formal summative assessment, they wanted regular formative self-assessment activities to be included throughout the modules to check learner’s knowledge and understanding.
- Audio narration, with two to three different speakers was requested and all imagery and scenario had to reflect the diversity of the broad international target audience.
OUR BESPOKE LEARNING SOLUTION
We designed the bespoke interactive e-learning course, made up of eight interactive modules with a total duration of three hours. There was a balanced mix of information-based content screens and engaging interactions with the effective use of self-assessment throughout. The range of interactions enabled learners to build confidence in their knowledge and understanding.
A comprehensive bank of supplementary resources was embedded in the e-learning to provide further study opportunities.
The imagery in the course was largely photographic, using imagery provided by UNHCR and the UNHCR image library. The photographs reflected the diversity of the audience, and the range of situations covered.
