NHS Education Scotland – Enhanced Psychological Practitioner trainer for Children and Young People (EPP-C&YP)

Blended training to enable delivery of interventions for mild to moderate difficulties in children, young people and their families.

The training need

NHS Education for Scotland (NES), in partnership with Aleido had recently developed a new certificate-level blended training scheme to create a new workforce of psychological practitioners capable of delivering high-quality, evidence-based interventions for mild to moderate difficulties in adult patients.

The success of the course for adults led NES to extend the training to practitioners who would deliver psychological interventions with children, young people and their families for common mental health problems (anxiety, low mood and parenting).

Specific requirements of the e-learning included:

  • Effective digital training that would be used as prework and support face-to-face sessions.

Our bespoke learning solution

Successfully developing the digital solution for the adult EPP training meant that we already understood the target audience, the learning need and were familiar with the sometimes-challenging subject matter.

Our visual design and instructional approach complements the treatments used in the existing EPP training programme, while ensuring this new course has its own identity. The use of bright colours reflects the subject matter (psychological interventions for children, young people and their families). Like the original EPP training course, the EPP-CYP course is responsive and can be seamlessly accessed across a broad range of devices.

The training is structured as a blended course that is delivered over multiple weeks. Each module begins with interactive digital prework, which is followed by face-to-face workshops. To facilitate these workshops, the digital modules we developed feature essay-type questions that learners can complete online, and which would be saved to a learner journal. This can subsequently be printed out to evidence the work completed, and can also be used to support learners during face-to-face workshops.
