Welcoming new employees to SKAO

Aleido created a positive and motivating first impression for new SKAO employees embarking on their learning journey, introducing them to the history, values, and operations of the organisation.

The training need

With its diverse stakeholders and global presence, SKAO (Square Kilometre Array Observatory) is a complex organisation that requires concise and inclusive induction training.

The organisation’s previous induction process was resource-intensive, time-consuming, and challenging to coordinate across different locations due to time differences.

A blended approach to the induction, incorporating e-learning and essential face-to-face elements, would ensure consistency across sites, offer flexibility around timing, and enhance accessibility to crucial information during onboarding and for future reference.

Specific requirements of the e-learning included:

A 70-minute e-learning course, including bespoke animation and some pre-existing video.
Summary audio featuring voices representative of SKAO’s diverse geographical locations.
A responsive solution which will be available to all on the SKAO learning platform.

Our bespoke learning solution

Our solution is a 3-part induction module to be completed in a new staff member’s first week with the organisation. A second version for partner staff omitting SKAO employment/HR specifics, is 12 minutes shorter.

As their first learning interaction after starting with the organisation, both versions of the module are designed to create a positive and motivating first impression for new employees, building their confidence that they have the information and tools needed to begin their role.

The three sections are accessed via a menu. Each section is further divided into bite-sized topics to enable easy navigation and completion in stages. Visual indicators show the learner which areas of content they’ve already viewed.

Our greatest challenge during this project was the inclusion of industry-specific imagery. We worked closely with SKAO and their brand library to fill the gaps where stock photography proved insufficient.

Through a combination of SKAO satellite imagery and utilisation of the glow effect for borders and icons, we were able to create a unique, modern look and feel that reflects the work of SKAO. Video backgrounds feature in the menu and submenu screens that give the module a dynamic feel.
