Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards Refresher

Aleido created an e-learning module that builds on managers' practical understanding of the LEGS handbook and tools, supporting lives and livelihoods in disaster-affected livestock communities.

The training need

The Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards (LEGS) were established in 2006 with the goal of enhancing the quality and livelihoods impact of livestock-related projects in humanitarian situations. The LEGS handbook, published in 2009, offers standards for effective emergency responses, using a participatory approach.

There was an established half-day LEGS refresher training module to provide a recap for livestock and humanitarian programme managers who’ve attended the 3-day LEGS workshop and have since been applying the approach in their country or region. This was to be transformed into a 90-minute bespoke e-learning course that builds on managers' practical understanding, supporting lives and livelihoods in disaster-affected livestock communities.

Specific requirements of the e-learning included:

A 90-minute e-learning course, including embedded video and audio.
A responsive solution which will be available to all on the LEGS learning platform.

Our bespoke learning solution

Our bespoke solution comprises a 90-minute e-learning module split into smaller topics that guide the learner through the practical application of the LEGS handbook and tools. The module menu includes an estimated duration and progress indicators for each topic, enabling the learner to plan this training around their day-to-day duties.

We leveraged the LEGS branding, including the font and colour scheme, to create a modern, dynamic module that features humanitarian and livestock-related imagery. Existing LEGS training videos are interspersed throughout the module to enhance the learner’s journey. A variety of interactive components engages the learner as they navigate through the main learning points.

Key messages are delivered in a memorable way through large, clickable icons that reveal further information. Content dividers provide a ‘look ahead’ to the rest of the topic, building learner interest through anticipation.

Scenarios based on real experiences are brought to life with embedded LEGS video and audio files. Guiding questions create context and meaning for the learner, enhancing their understanding benefits of following the guidance laid out in the LEGS handbook.
