The perfect balance between support and autonomy
Boglárka Kiss's journey from tourism to tech showcases adaptability, embracing new opportunities, and personal growth. With a passion for enabling collaboration and communication, she found her calling as a technical writer at Aleido.
Before Covid, I worked in tourism to make ends meet and figure out my next step. I did a coding boot camp, but it wasn’t the right match for me. I guess I just didn’t connect with the subject. But while there, I also learned about agile and liked the idea of being a scrum master. Giving structure to things is something I really like, along with the idea of having my work be centred around facilitating collaboration and communication.
I found Aleido on Facebook and applied because I have a technical aptitude and speak English. During the interview process, I learned that with the development opportunities at the company, I could end up in a similar position as a scrum master. As one opportunity for professional development, I was to be able to take part in Aleido’s leadership training series called Promising Candidate Programme in 2023. Though I’m not yet in a leadership position, I’m happy with my progress so far.
Making use of the structuring skills
I currently work on four projects simultaneously. On two of them as a technical writer, on the third I have mostly coordination roles, and on the fourth as a translation project manager. These projects all focus on connectivity and smart devices. It might sound similar, but they are remarkably different from one another. I like that they all stretch a different muscle and there is variety in what I do. Aside from having to know four different products in depth, I also utilise management skills, negotiation skills, tracking workflows, collecting information from people and places, and putting them in their place in a way that is up to standard. I really get to make the most out of my structuring skills.
There is a lot of teamwork involved, but I also get to be creative and enjoy structured workflows that I can lean into and relax a bit. It’s not always easy to manage, but my coordinator helps me prioritize my work. Since for one project, some of my colleagues are an entire workday behind me due to different time zones, flexibility is much needed. My line management is always the same, which keeps my time and commitments from being fragmented too much.
"For me, transparency offers a sense of predictability, which gives a great amount of security and trust. It means accountability, whether I commit to something or get a commitment from someone, I know can count on that."
Autonomy and support
One of the things I like about working at Aleido is that we have a great support system in place, so I know who to turn to if I need help in any way. Roles and responsibilities are clear and accessible within Aleido, which saves both time and stress. I never feel alone, but I also have autonomy in my work. That was built in from the beginning, I was able to do my tasks to the best of my ability on my own time, and we went from there. A great way of building mutual trust. It is really freeing to not be micromanaged all day. The perfect balance between being supported and having autonomy.
Collaborating openly
At Aleido, one of our values is ‘Collaborate openly’. For me, transparency offers a sense of predictability, which gives a great amount of security and trust. It means accountability, whether I commit to something or get a commitment from someone, I know can count on that. There is a record of every plan, progress, milestone, and achievement. I think it’s important to have everything out in the open because it leaves little room for miscommunication. It helps tremendously with productivity and keeps stress levels low because it makes work predictable.
